1. THC Included In the Governor's Budget - The Tug Hill Commission was pleased to learn that it is included in the Governor Cuomo's proposed budget for the upcoming fiscal year. The Commission is being treated the same as other agencies, boards and commissions and has included a 2.5% reduction in its budget. This will allow the Commission to maintain a level operation and should hopefully allow them to fill vacancies that have remained unfilled.
2. Tug Hill Commission 23rd Annual Local Government Conference - Registration information has been mailed to local officials for the Tug Hill Commission's 23rd Annual Local Government Conference on Thursday, March 29, at JCC, Watertown .The four different tracts will offer a variety of courses for all local officials. Three courses from the NYS Comptroller's Office will focus on the 2% tax cap and how to continue to provide services and stay within the tax cap. Certificates of attendance will be available at the end of the conference. Early registration fee is $50 and must be postmarked by 3/7/2010, registration is $75 if postmarked by 3/14/2010 and if you pay at the door, the fee is $100. 3. Tax Cap Workshop February 16 at SUNY IT - Representatives from the Syracuse Regional Office of the State Comptroller will present timely information to assist officials in preparing their annual budgets. A tax levy limit ("tax cap") training workshop has been scheduled for Thursday, February 16, 2012 at Kunsela Hall, SUNYIT, Utica. The sign in will start at 6:00 PM with the session running from 6:30 - 8:30 PM. Pre-registration is requested. This training program is designed to be timely in assisting village officials in preparing their annual budgets. Town officials and fire districts/departments are also encouraged to attend. There will be an ample question and answer period. The workshop is sponsored by the Local Government Education Committee of Oneida and Herkimer Counties. 4. Informational Meeting on Natural Gas Drilling - The Town of Lee has invited officials from Chesapeake Energy, a company conducting hydrofracking in Pennsylvania, to present a public session on the controversial gas drilling process. The meeting is scheduled for Thursday, February 16 at 6:00 PM at the Lee Town Hall, 5808 Stokes Lee Center Road, Lee Center, NY. Town residents, as well as other local municipalities are strongly encouraged to attend. The session is being held for people to learn more about hyrdofracking and will be for informational purposes only, not for debate. There will be time for questions and the meeting is open to local officials in Oneida County and the public. The informational meeting is being held to gather information from a different perspective so local officials will have a better understanding of the issue before final decisions are made.
5. Erosion and Sediment Control Workshop - A workshop on erosion and sediment control is being sponsored by the Oneida County Soil and Water Conservation District at its facility at 121 Second Street, Oriskany at the County Farm and Home Center. The session will be held on February 14 and will start with registration at 8 am. The course will begin at 8:30 and end at 12:30. There is a $75 fee for the workshop and pre-registration is requested by contacting Jo-Anne Humphreys at 736-3334 or via email jo-anne-humphreys@oneidaswcd.org by February 10th. Photo ID is required by the DEC to sign into the session so please bring it with you. This workshop provides the required training for contractors and site inspectors to comply with the SPDES General Permit for Stormwater Discharges from Construction Activity (GP-0-10-001). All those responsible for the installation, construction, repair, maintenance or the inspection of erosion and sediment control measures or the construction of post-construction stormwater management practices at SPDES-permitted construction sites in New York State are required to attend a DEC-endorsed 4-hour training course every three years. Credits are being offered for Codes Officers who take this course. This is a good opportunity to learn about how to inspect construction sites, earn yearly credits and be able to report training on your annual report
6. Local Government Efficiency Grant Program -Applications are now available for the 2011-2012 Local Government Efficiency Grant Program and the Local Government Citizens Reorganization Empowerment Grant Program. Local Government Efficiency Grants are competitive grants to local governments that help reduce municipal expenses and property taxes by helping local government entities plan for and implement new service delivery efficiencies. The goal of the Local Government Citizens Reorganization Empowerment Grant Program is to reduce municipal expenses and property taxes through government reorganization or alternative actions if reorganization is not a feasible or desirable option, or will not reduce expenses. Eligible local governments are villages, towns and special districts The submission deadline for the Local Government Efficiency Grant is 4:00 p.m. on March 21, 2012. Deadlines for the Local Government Citizens Reorganization Empowerment Grant (a non-competitive grant) are 4:00 p.m. on first Wednesday of each month except for January, where the deadline is the first Thursday.
